No, I've always found them to be colourfast, but if you are worried give it a swish in boiling water befor using it for the first time.

I use old tights and they work well...I wash them first of course. When I make redcurrent or blackcurrent jelly I always use tights and they are ideal
I have been looking for a recipe for ginger beer for ages and this one looks good. I will give it a go, thanks

  • Has anyone else made ginger beer? The Small Penguins were given a kit, and the beer has been fab.

We're now getting a bit sick of it, and would like to save the *plant* for another time. If we freeze the yeasty mixture, will it restart at a later date?

    TIA, Penny. x

I have actually used a J cloth also. It does not affect the colour. I made non alcoholic ginger beer. I grated the ginger into a bowl then put it in the J cloth and strained it.

I used to make ginger beer from an old traditional recipe that is fizzy but contains no yeast! The ground ginger seems to create it's own from sitting and fermenting with the other ingredients. I used to use a clean old tea towel, which I would scald with boiling water to make sure it was really clean before straining. Tights work too but they need to be a high denier!

    Hi dublinsgirl,

There's an earlier thread with some recipes that may help too so I've added your thread to it to keep all the replies together.
