Drainage by patio

My garden is higher than my patio and then gradually slopes down into it. Where it slopes to the patio slabs water gathers after heavy rain. Is there a way of draining this. I was thinking of digging a 5 inch trench and then putting gravel in it .

Not sure of the volume of water / run off you are talking about but a simple French drain consisting of a trench filled with gravel may suffice or you may need to do a proper job and include a perforated pipe within the gravel to aid water dispersion.
However, if there is a high volume then a linear drainage may be best but more costly and probably not so pleasing on the eye.Thoughts:

The grass gets soggy not waterlogged as it is heavy clay content by me. We are on a slight slope so one house next door is slightly above me and the other side they are slightly below me. So as long as my 6/7inch deep trench is higher on the side Where my neighbour is higher and then I gradually lower the treanch towards the other side that is lower where the drains are that should do it shouldn't it?0

We had the same problem.
As part of our patio build we incorporated a perforated pipe (covered with about 75mm of small pebbles) - we fortunately found a drain by our door an were able to connect to this. Its amazing the amount of silt that collects in the pipe and we have to flush it with a hose.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
If you wrap the pipe in geofabric, available by the metre at good builders' yards, you should get less silt build-up inside.0
