warning! UK FINANCE cold calls.

Hi,

I just had an upsetting phone call which I'd like to warn people about.
I was called by an Asian lady, who I could hardly understand and all I could make out was my name, house number and something about a loan application against my house. Now, I didn't apply for a loan, so I was immediately concerned that someone was using my name, you hear so much about identity fraud these days. So I explained that I hadn't asked for a loan and tried to find out who she was and who had asked for said loan. She said she was phoning for UK Finance in Regent Street and said if I didn't want a loan, all was ok. Ofcourse, as far as I was concerned it wasn't ok!
In the end I got to speak to her manager who was a bit easier to understand. By this time I was almost having kittens! Finally I extracted the information that this was a cold call, they had picked my name from the phone book and were touting for business!
I am home recovering from a minor operation. Supposing I had just had by-pass surgery or something!
So, beware of UK FINANCE cold calls!!!!!!

BTW I tried to Google them and couldn't find them. What a surprise!!

I ahd an interview for a company like that earlier in the year. Throughout the whole process they said everyone they phoned had applied for finance recentely but when i was listening in on calls 9/10 people said they'd hadn't applied for any finance so i asked the person I was listening in on about it and they said although they did get sold info about people who had recently applied for loans etc but it was mostly just cold calls from a phonebook. Not very good though, i'd imagine a lot of people will think about it like you a few hours later and worry about fraud. I didn't take the job btw.

  • Not wishing to upset anyone, but you would think that they would use people with a better command of English in order to avoid misunderstandings like this, wouldn't you?
Had I understood her from the start, I would have realised she was tring to sell me something, said a polite " no thank you" and ended the call!!

Try registering with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS).

It should (after a few weeks) cut out cold calls originating in the UK.
It doesn't work for overseas calls.

    Also, request to go ex-directory.

Then, be careful who you give your telephone number to to avoid getting on any more lists.

I had a call like this last week, I just put the phone on the table and left it for 10 minutes - when I went back the line was dead, so he must have got bored and hung up!!!! We are X Directory and registered with the TPS so how they got our number is anyones guess!!!
  • We are registered with the TPS but I will check we're still on their list. Believe me, I am very careful who I give my personal details to, to the point of being anti-social!
Trouble with the phone call was that it took me ages to work out that it wasn't someone checking that I wasn't being cloned!
Ah well, such is life! Tho I must say, ex-d sounds more and more attractive by the day!!

One way, is to setup 0870 and 0845 redirection number to your home number (these are free in most places and you earn small comission on anyone using it, just google it up, you even get a choice of easy numbers) and then fight companies and banks with their own weapon - when asked by anyone other than friends for number only give away your 0845 or 0870 "proxy". Asian call centres don't call 0845's, and you earn few pence for every stupid cold calling company that wants to disturb your peace on weekends or evenings.
  • That sounds interesting, I'll check it out. Thanks!
  • I have been getting calls from these !!!!!! for over a month now, every single day sometimes more than once. It always appears as "international" and i've tried everything, being polite and asking them to take me off their "list" to screaming obscenities at them, nothing works, i dread the phone ringing now, how can i stop them calling me?
