Help with birds in the garden

Our front garden is half gravel and half planted up with bark on top of the soil. The birds keep throwing the bark all over the place to get to their dinner but it makes such a mess in the garden since most fo it ends up in the path or on the gravel. I am considering removing all the bark so that they don't make a mess but it does make the garden look nicer. Does anyone have any ideas of how I could stop the birds making a mess of the bark - but I don't want to do anything to harm them.

Thanks

IANAgardener, but how about using crushed slate instead of bark?

    I've been Money Tipped!
How about trying a little fence around the bark area?

You're encouraging them by having bark as the bugs they like to eat hide under there!
