USD MasterCard in UK

Hello all, I have a rather strange and niche situation.

I desire a MasterCard that can receive US dollars and can then be used to top up my Revolut account (using $). (The Revolut MasterCard would be perfect, but it needs also to be able to make payments to cex.io, but Revolut do not suppose this merchant.) It also needs to be MasterCard, not Visa.

It could, for example, be a prepaid $ MC, but I then need to be able to top up my Revolut account without excessive fees. (Revolut is a UK company, so I expect this will class a transaction in the UK.)

It is also acceptable that the $ arrive to the card, and it is converted into £ at the MasterCard rate (without additional fees).

Does anyone know of any solutions to this? Ideally the card would be free, as I wouldn't know for certain if it would work in advance. Thanks!

Would like to help but not clear to me what you want.

    1. what currency would you like the Mastercard denominated in? If $, then all spending in the UK would be converted to your dollar balance (exactly as if you were an American tourist arriving here with his $ card and spending in UK shops) - at the Mastercard rate BUT plus any fees etc the card provider added.

    2. "can then be used to top up my Revolut account" - this would be counted as a cash advance. You would pay cash advance fees set by the card provider plus any conversion fees if you took out the cash in GBP exactly ths same as if you put the card into an ATM and took out cash.

Sorry if I have mis-understood your requirements.
  • cex.io that you require the card to work with is a bitcoin exchange.

Why do you need to sell your Bitcoin in USD?

Are you simply trying to buy/sell bitcoins?

If that exchange doesn't support selling in GBP then perhaps you should look at transferring the coins into an exchange that does. Then you can use your UK bank accounts as normal?
  • Thanks for your responses. I'll reply to 18cc first.

I'd like a USD MasterCard: there is no requirement for any transactions to be doable in GBP. Also, Revolut's FAQs say "Please note, credit card top-ups will be recognised as a normal card transaction, not a cash advance". Moreover, I can pay dollars into the Revolut account.

However, I have just noticed that it also says "Unfortunately, some Maestro, pre-paid debit cards and American Express are not supported", so topping up from a prepaid USD MC wouldn't be possible... Apologies for not noticing this prior to posting.

To stevenhp1987, I'm doing a small amount of arbitrage trading, using CEX.IO to sell in USD. They have limits for withdrawals to cards, but the limits are separate for Visa and MasterCard. I'm doing it with Visa, hence wanting a MasterCard.
