Inception date of Car Insurance Policy

Hi there,

I have a question about the inception date of my car insurance policy. I recently had an accident and I have 30 days to report to my insurance for a claim, noone else was involed so essentially it will be a At fault claim. The bigger question is I had the insurance for 6 months, I got a new car within last month and just after few days of driving my car I had the accident, is the inception date the original start of the policy or when the car was changed?

Kind regards

Zerb

If you changed your existing policy, the inception date hasn’t changed.

    Unusual question. Why ask?

Where do you get the 30 days to inform them from?

Usually you must notify them ASAP, whether your claiming or
not you should notify them of accidents or incidents.

If you are asking was the new car covered at the time of the incident, then had you informed your insurer of the change of vehicle prior to the incident?

Yes the new car was insuranced and the policy was changed when the accident happened, however the clause within the insurance policy mention's that no claims can be carried out within 14 days of the inception of the policy. E.g. I got the policy in August on my old car, I changed the policy in February, I had an accident after two days of driving the new car covered on the policy. Policy mentioned no claim within 14 days of inception, however needs to be reported within 30 days. Is the inception date august or date of switch?

I am not sure, if someone would have had an serious accident and they would require urgent treatment then insurance wouldn't be the first thing on their mind?!? I guess limits is set up by insurance provider's as "grace" period???

Are you sure your not reading the breakdown section?

It's very unusual for a motor policy to have such a clause.

Inception date is August so no worries (though you were covered from day 1 and have misread the clause you refer to!)

If your incapacitated in hospital then yes your not going to notify them within the hour, but that appears not to be the case and if you report it 30 days after the event they maybe wondering why it took you so long and look for reasons why you delayed notifying them.

Accident / claims hotline should be 24/7 also.
