Got the final on two pc's and release candidate on two others. All ok so far, not a single problem. Best release for me since Hoary (or maybe Edgy) so far.

Heres hoping this one is better running from my flash drive than 7.04. I had all sorts of problems getting that to run. I see the install instructions have changed for it so might be better.

Anyone tried Ubuntu 7.10 with Wubi?
Faith is believing what you know ain't so...
  • Has anyone had problems mounting NTFS / FAT partitions? 7.04 mounted them all with weird file attributes, it had execute set for everything and try as i might could not just get it to open things normally.

In what sense do you mean it won't open things "normally".

Does it throw an error saying yo don't have permissions? Or are you trying to open a file format that may not be supported by Linux?

I notice it every time I do updates and I keep looking at it thinking, "Shall I..?", then I say to myself, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" so I'm waiting for 'Hardy Heron' (managed to make a 'Hardy Heron' avatar with 'The Gimp' the other day..! ).

Something that does occur to me though.. (sorry I'm a Linux newb.! :o ) is will I be able to upgrade from Feisty to Hardy..?

Oh, and.. I believe 'those in the know' prefer to use the version numbers rather than the names, but I love the animal theme thing ;)

This might sound like a stupid question (and it probably is): Is this an OS in its own right; what i mean is, a replacement for Winxp/Vista. Is the install user friendly (GUI based like windows). I remember earlier versions of Linux being 'difficult' to install - you needed a techie brain etc. Thanks :)

Linux is an operating system. Ubuntu flavour of linux is particularly easy to install. I found it easier than installing XP anyway.

Yep, I've used it instead of XP for about three months now. I can't quite 'burn' XP as there are still a couple of things that I need it for: a game I can't get working in Ubuntu (though I haven't played it for a while), and Paint Shop Pro which I don't want to let go, though I might be able to get used to Gimp...

I agree with superscaper too about installing. Pretty easy. I had to be careful with the partitioning aspect of it: had to look up what to do and gingerly did it worrying that I might mess it up. It went beautifully however. I l:heart2:ve it! :)

Linux is NOT as user-friendly as Windows. If you want to do anything other than surfing the web (Firefox comes as standard with Ubuntu) then if you're a newb like me, you WILL have to look stuff up. It's not just a case of double-clicking: you have to be a little more involved. However, it seems much more stable: my PC's getting on a bit now - I built it about 4 years ago, and it kept crashing in XP. Has only frozen up on me a couple of times since 'converting'.

Go on.. give it a go. You know you want to! :p Just be careful with the install, then you can boot up whichever OS you fancy using that day..

    Good luck!

Yes there are a couple of caveats. It's not as compatible with all hardware as Windows. Also if anything does go wrong or you have a compatibility problem, it's much less user friendly to sort out that Windows. When it works it works really great, when it doesn't it is a bit more techie to solve.
