Broken Hotpoint oven

Hi all,

Back in May 2015 we bought a Hotpoint electric double oven online from currys.

All was fine until September 2017 when the top oven failed, and an intermittent 'clanking' noise developed on the fan on the bottom oven. Some back-and-forth and eventually the stat on the top oven was raplaced FOC. The engineer could not replicate the noise, so we left it at that.

Roll on to 25/01/18, turn the bottom oven on, get an electric humming noise. Look inside and its glowing red hot through where the fan blows, and no fan spinning. I turn it off, open the top oven to have a look and there is a bang, and the oven floor drastically distorts. It's then switched off at the mains.

After loads of messing around and being on hold forever, and our case 'sitting on the system' for 4 days where it would have remained had I not called for progress we eventually get an engineer out on 31/01 who said it cannot be repaired. He also said from the serial number he is confident it was built in 2005. Again, we bought it in 2015...

More calls to currys, who today (8 days later) offer less than half what we paid for it, and a £30 goodwill gesture.

Is it worth persuing further? I'm really not happy that we have been offered far less than half of what we paid for it when it failed after 32 months. From reading around, an oven should be lasting 10 -15 years, so I don't think the offer matches the depreciation time.

Ironically, the one it replaced was from the 80's or before, and still worked fine. It was just hideous!

Thanks for taking the time to read this tome, I look forward to any advice!

Its pretty normal. You have had nearly 3 years use of it.

How much did you pay for it and how much have they offered you .
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

    Thanks.

We paid £279, have been offered £126:51, and then with some poking they offered £30 as a goodwill gesture.

This will take 3-5 working days to process though, meaning it could be 13 days without an oven.

I get that they won't offer a full refund, I just don't think what they are offering is enough. I don't really expect to be purchasing a new oven every 2 and a half years...

And Currys agree with you... which is why they are offering you any money back.

An over 50% refund might suggest that they consider the life of an oven to be around five years or more.

It's out of warranty, but apparently under 'fair usage' or something.

Anyway, thanks for the replies :)

Although we are living in an age when we are constantly being told to "recycle", manufacturers are employing the tactic of "built in obsolesence", where every appliance/vehicle is being built with a designed lifespan.
The result is that modern goods are lasting a fraction of goods from thirty years ago.

    Yes, it is wrong.
No, unfortunately we cannot do anything about it and we are pawns in the game.

I totally agree with you but the prices paid nowadays are a lot cheaper whether in today's or old money.
OP said he paid £279 for the oven - I remember paying £500 or more when I bought my first house - it was nothing special just an electric oven.(I'm going back to the 80's!)
