Why is everyone saying to ignore it? She could easily of taken out a payday loan in OPs name and put her own email address, to avoid OP getting any notice about it so he doesn't find out... Clearly not something to ignore!

OP check your credit file to find out for certainty? Maybe worth a conversation with the wife as well....

If that is the case then it would be fraud and the OP would not be liable for the debt, but they would probably have to be prepared to report it as fraud. So definitely a relationship issue as well as a financial one.

OP - check your credit files to see if there is anything showing, and if they are clear, then speak to your wife to see whether she knows anything about it t , as at that point it is either a scam and you and she both need to know about it, or it may be a debt in her name and there is sloppy work on the part of the creditor or the debt recovery co.

(slightly different, but I once had a lot of trouble with the local council, who mis-read / mis-typed 'Ms' as 'Mr' and assumed that I had a new partner (with exactly the same first and surname as me) living in my house and that I was claiming a single persons discount I wasn't entitled to. Is it possible that they have just written 'Mr' where it should be 'Mrs' and the e-mail is meant to be addressed to your wife, or did they include your first name as well?)

It's also possible that there is a genuine debt but that they have got the wrong person - i.e. they are looking for a Joe Blogs who legitimately owes them £xxx and have found your name and your wife's e-mail and assumed that you are that Joe Bloggs, even if you are not.

If there is a debt, you are only liable for it if you signed up to borrow the money or if you signed as a guarantor.

It could be phising though so don't jump to conclusions. I always do the searches for cheaper utilities etc but because it will be in OH name input his details. Then because he is hopeless with email ie doesn't read it very often and gets impatient with unsolicitated stuff and will delete rather than read I get things sent to my email but with his name. He does sometimes ask me if he can use my 'dump' email address. Think unpaid PA ;)

I never use his details unless he asks or I've checked with him first and never sign up for anything in his name unless he's read through what I'm signing him up for. If any phone calls need making he always puts me down as having authority to speak for him aswell.

If the OP runs things in a similar way it is quite possible that it's an email to him at his OHs email address and still be phising.

Isn't the easiest starting point just to ask if your wife knows anything about it?

By all means then check credit files etc but at least you know what you think may be the issue then.

Wrong way round, he said it was emailed to his wife but addressed to him.

    Doh

Walks away hanging head in shame.
