Debt in my name!
Morning all, I've seen an email to my wife but addressed to me of a debt that is in arrears, I know nothing about it. Am I liable, I guess so. Advice would be appreciated.

An EMAIL!! not a letter? Check your credit files, but it is likely to be spam. Why would they send it to an unconfirmed email address, your wife's, and not even yours. It is likely to be spam and I would say ignore it - whatever you do DO NOT click reply or click on any links it contains. By all means write down (pen and paper) any details and then delete it. You can use the details to check credit files etc to put your mind at ease.0

Thanks for the responses, this is not the first time this has happened, and although I haven't had a chance to reread the email, it looks like a debt recovery company. All clear now of debts:beer:

Check all 3 credit files to see if it appears on any of them as it could just be a phishing email.

You say its in your wifes name so its her debt nad your not liable. Why did she give your email address ?
Who is the name after the @ ?
Do as above and go from there, post back if there is anything on your reports and hers.0 -

If you know nothing about it then for sure it’s spam of the phishing variety and I am bemused as to why you’d do anything other than (a) block that sender in the future and (b) delete the email.
On the face of it you would appear to be very vulnerable to fraud if you think emails about debts you know nothing about are even worth following up and that you could be liable and should respond. Good for asking here but still worrying.0 -
Why is everyone saying to ignore it? She could easily of taken out a payday loan in OPs name and put her own email address, to avoid OP getting any notice about it so he doesn't find out... Clearly not something to ignore!
OP check your credit file to find out for certainty? Maybe worth a conversation with the wife as well....0 -
Hmmm, not something I'd thought of, cue awkward conversation with wife....0

Cheers all will hit the credit file then have an interesting convo with "the wife".All clear now of debts:beer:
