Service charges and unemployment.

I am curious to know if any format of benefit would pay my service charges of a £100 pounds per month if I was made unemployed ?

I own my flat outright and am a freeholder along with 5 others in our block.

I am currently working but have always wondered if housing benefit would pay my service charges if I was made unemployed.

I am currently debt free and owe nothing on my flat.

Many thanks Famo.

The DWP can provide help towards to costs of service charges. They may not cover the full amount and it may depend on what the service charge is used to pay but there is help available.

Even though you have no mortgage, the benefit is paid under the support for mortgage interest scheme (SMI).

From April it will be on a loan basis.

I knew that SMI would be on a loan basis but not service charges. That's interesting.

The service charge element will not be on a loan basis. They're already sending out new entitlement letters that confirm this.
