Why does Windows 10 crash?

Yes, a simple enough question that many people ask. So seemingly there is an issue and wneeed how it can be overcome. In essence, suddenly the screen blackens and it reboots.

How long is a piece of string?
Windows falls over for many reasons - hardware, software, incompatible hardware, incompatible software, user error, Windows error...
Need more details, what are you doing when it decides to reboot?0 -

Which version of W10 are you having issues with? (type "winver" in Cortana/search)
EDIT: Blimey, already superseded :- https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4058258%20%22windows%2010%220 -

If there's no BSOD and it just blacks out, I'd suggest a hardware problems.
My old PC did this and it was the PSU not keeping a steady 12V0 -
Mine's been doing this since early January. A sudden reboot, no warning or notification. I've been assuming it might be something to do with the glitches in Intel & AMD processors that was reported and patched recently but I thought that had been fixed by Windows Updates now.
I've updated the few drivers that needed it but it happened again this morning. I've started recording what I was doing each time but, so far, they don't seem to have anything in common.
I did look in Event Viewer, which told me it was event ID 41 but nothing else that made much sense.0 -
exactly the same here. Windows 10 (winver 1709) on a HP Envy which is around 18 months old, with AMD processor. i can't work out exactly when this started happening but every now and then (maybe once or twice a week) with no pattern the screen suddenly goes black and the laptop reboots. all is then well........until the next time.
in a way i'm glad it's not just me!!0 -
Sounds like a giant leap backwards for Windows.
I bought a new laptop yesterday so have no experience of W10 yet, but I thought this sort of problem went away with XP.
7 and 8.1 were very stable.0 -

OP here. I have read many posts about this on various sites. I read in WebUser soon after W10 was introduced, that this was something peculiar to W10. My thoughts are NOT to fiddle with settings if this is of a larger scale that one would expect.
Thankfully, even though the screen blacks out and it then reboots, when it does return at least it is recognised by the message " because your system closed down etc......." you are given the option to return to where you left off or start with new page. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
