Why is he doing so many collages, doesn't sound like they'll be helpful for being a mechanic.

i won't be involved at all just offering him guidance.

He is 18 so officially they are not paying under what they need to. It just seems very poor that they offer no recognition his achievement at collage ( collage have put him for apprentice of the year too)and then pay someone else more who is less qualified
He is just feeling very undervalued, which i do understand

I do understand, but this might be a valuable lesson in life/employment for him (dress it up somehow :rotfl: :o )

As soon as he turns 19, he will be entitled to wage for age.

Ahem! Bigisi was being a bit cheeky (collage vs college). He was questioning why your son is doing so many artworks when they won't help him to be a mechanic

HE can speak to his employers, but since what he would actually be doing is asking for a pay rise, he should approach it like anyone else seeking a rise.
don't argue about what someone else is/might be getting paid, that's not really relevant (unless there is any concern about discrimination based on a protected characteristic)
Focus on why he is worth more to the employee, what he has done / is doing that means he is worth more and it is reasonable to pay him more. This might include putting forward examples of things he is now doing, tasks he takes responsibility for etc that he wasn't previously able to do.

If they are not willing to consider increasing his pay now, he can also ask for feedback about his performance, and specifically about what he would need to improve on / start doing in order to reach a point where they would be willing to increase his pay.
All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)

Different trade but my nephew is getting increasingly frustrated with his employer. He's doing an electrical apprenticeship and is in his final year. His attendance at college has been awful (his words) because his employer says he needs him on the job. He can't get his practical work signed off because his boss only tells him a day in advance where he's going to be working, and the person who will sign the work off needs at least 72 hours notice to arrange to be there. Most of his work has been in the London area although he lives in the West of England so it's not a simple case of contacting somebody and saying I'm at xyz today can you come and see my work.
He's only sticking it out because he understands what the 'end game' is.

What was agreed when he was taken on? Our apprentices have pay rates agreed for the duration of apprenticeship, i.e. x amount year 1, x amount year 2. It was built into their offer.

If you don't have that, then you're stuck negotiating pay like anyone else.

Is there not somewhere he can raise that? either with the college or the national apprentice scheme for sparkies?

Probably is somewhere Savvy_Sue. He doesn't want to rock the boat too much this close to completing. He just wants to get it over with and move on.

Yes, I'm sure he does. I'd just be worried (on his behalf) that completion of the paperwork wasn't going to happen, and the issues that could cause.
