Apprentice Son not being treated well

Hi looking for some advice
My son is in his 2nd year of an apprenticeship.
His employer are a large national company and so far haven't been great.
He completed his first collage year ( late due to employer cancelling) last November, and is yet to see any kind of increase in his pay. Is this right?
He has also today found out the new first year apprentice is actually being paid more than him.
How do we approach this with the employer?

As long as he's being paid the apprentice rate, he isn't entitled to any more.
What they pay other people isn't really relevant.0 -

How old is he?
First year apprentices are only entitled to app min wage, but once they are 19+ AND in second year of their apprenticeship, they are entitled to wage for age.0 -
I'm sorry to say this, but 'we' don't approach the employer at all. You can advise, and get information from sites like this, but 'he' has to do it, himself. Don't get involved in speaking to the employer. No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0

i won't be involved at all just offering him guidance.
He is 18 so officially they are not paying under what they need to. It just seems very poor that they offer no recognition his achievement at collage ( collage have put him for apprentice of the year too)and then pay someone else more who is less qualified
He is just feeling very undervalued, which i do understand0 -

Its understandable, but there are many reasons this could be the case. Maybe this new apprentice won't get certain perks or benefits your boy does.
As long as they are paying what they legally have to, thats it.0 -
What’s the apprenticeship, there may be industry rates applicable.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0

Motor technician
thanks for your help
I know as they are paying the legal rates its probably ok, just seems very unfair. No different perks all employees have the same as far as we can see0 -
The best advice to give him is to remember that the apprenticeship is a means to an end and to get on with it. Encouraging him to approach the employer about his hurt feelings really really doesn't help him.0

I think people have to remember that as well as the apprentices wage, they are actually being paid in other ways such as being sent to college and being taught a trade.0

Yes he is thankful for everything he is getting, he was just not very happy to find out that some less qualified is being paid more, which i do understand.
i will encourage him to leave it for now and see what happens0
