Travel insurance - always read everything.....

I recently had to make a claim against my travel insurance as my appendix burst 8 days before our holiday so couldn’t travel
I have annual travel insurance (by a company called Top Dog) through a comparison website and stupidly made the assimption that the summary details was sufficient and I didn’t need to read further
However a lesson for me and anyone else came when I claimed and assumed it would be simple and straightforward. I would apply with all the medical details and would gain a refund, minus an excess.
But not so
The insurance for cancellations has a set limit so we find ourselves getting less than half of the holiday costs back.
Insurance is a minefield if you don’t have a degree in finance and maths sometimes, not helped when even on large comparison sites they don’t list many of the pertinent details.
It’s about time the public were honestly told that insurance is like any high risk financial process, you won’t get back what you paid or expected.
Sorry for the rant, and yes it’s my fault for not reading infinite details, but surely we as consumers should be allowed to have faith in basic cover

Well the first thing I do is check HOW much the cover is for.
We went on a £30,000 holiday and I knew that we were only covered for £20,000 but was unable to get cover for the other 10 but I knew it and took the risk.
Caveat emptor is a very good and valid point.
WHY WOULD YOU NOT CHECK the most basic item..0 -
cover levels are the first thing I check , I'm not so bothered about personal possessions although a loss would be a pain its just stuff.
My daughter is currently in hospital in Mombasa after an accident , her £40 Post office policy are absolutely fantastic .This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Sorry to hear of your situation coggie2k, but you're right. Check what you're applying for, especially when online, and again when the policy documents come through.0
