I contacted Tonik the other day concerning the Projected Usage on my Bill
(a) on the top right where it states my payments it has Annual Projected Usage figures for Gas and Elec
(b) Further down on the individual Gas and Elec pages it again has Projected Usage figures

But (a) is completely different to (b)

Confused I emailed Tonik and asked for an explanation
All I received was a one liner - "Sorry to confuse but the figures you are referring to is the average yearly consumption figures and is purely there for your information"

Was it a case the CS advisor didn`t know either
Wasted my time

My advice. Ignore what is printed on statements and do your own calculation based on two statements with actual meter readings a year apart.

Yes, that`s exactly what I done
    Many thanks
  • I was / am thinking of switching to Tonik based on the favourable reported MSE user ratings. Tonik does not appear in the other online search comparisons I have done for some reason. There are a few suppliers e.g. E.On that come in for me at all around the same annual cost - based on my own data and calculations. Having read the forum correspondence on Tonik however I am wondering about having second thoughts. If I have a pretty firm idea of my consumption and what this works out in annual £££'s, have I got cause for concern?
    Telegraph Sam

There are also unknown unknowns - the one's we don't know we don't know

A few other worrying irregularities with this company:

    * Their "monthly" statements are erratic. Over the last 10 months, I've only received 7 monthly statements and 3 were missed. The date of the monthly statement varies from month to month.
    * The statements don't specify at the top what the actual billing period is. The billing periods for electricity sometimes correspond to the billing period for gas, but sometimes the same statement has different periods for electricity and gas. I assume this is something to do with infrequent meter readings and use of estimates, but it certainly makes the bills confusing. The first page of each statement sometimes includes a credit where the billing periods used overlaps with previous statements, adding to the confusion.
    * There's no way of getting an overview of long-term energy usage or meter readings on the Tonik website, so you can't see at a glance how much electricity and gas you've used over the previous year without adding up the separate statements, which is difficult to do as a result of the problem above. I'd suggest keeping a record of meter readings to help with this.
