sorry - not near wiltshire - worth asking ...
Also, any thoughts on this please
I want to make all the data disappear ... and so will investigate DNAB -
One thing I am not sure of though -
I have a 'Recovery' disc - is this the disc that will contain Windows and reinstall it on re-boot after wiping the HD?
I do not have a disc that says clearly 'WINDOWS XP system disc' or similar on it.0 -
bump....
anyone?0 -
Chaucer,
Not too sure what you are after above...
At work we once drilled a few half inch holes into the platters, then hit the spindle and platters a few times with a big hammer. Now the go through an acid bath before being shredded.
You will probably want the more subtle approach? http://www.snapfiles.com/get/killdisk.html .
Since you are giving it away I would not worry about the OS, or give them you recovery cd and let them do it. Many PCs were shipped with recovery disks only.GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time.0 -

what I want to know is ... does the recovery disc actually contain XP?
After deleting HD using DNAB, for example, would inserting recovery disc load XP onto the computer again?
Also, would all the updates (service packs etc) need downloading again?
I could leave it for the new owner to do but my conscience tells me to pass it on in fully operational.
further ...
an earlier question that was not answered but could prove useful....RE: this advice ...

I have two HDs in present desktop and before getting rid of it, thought it might make sense to take out the bigger of these (80gb - my back up HD)
Are you saying that I could buy a fairly cheap piece of kit that would house my old back-up HD and connect it to my new PC via USB?
If so, is this better than putting HD into new PC ? I am thinking of warranty etc being affected0 -
question asked on another thread but lost in amongst other things ... so start again....any help appreciated.
got a new PC - selling old one and I want to make it safe - seen threads referring to DNAB
I have got a 'recovery disc' for old PC
