Applying for social housing with partner

If someone were to be applying for social housing with their partner, would they necessarily have to do a joint application? Or, could one person apply and when they eventually get the house/flat inform the council that they would both be living in the property? Would this cause any problems?
Thanks
Thanks

You're asking if you can lie on your application. That would be fraudulent, you would be gaining an advantage based on deception.
Sometimes there is such a thing as a stupid question.0 -
It wouldnt be a fraudulent application if you name them as someone who you intend to have living with you rather than a joint tenant.
Partners do not have to be joint tenants but do need to be disclosed as occupant.
It would be fraudulent if you omitted this information to obtain housing and benefits which is what you seem to be suggesting you would do. Would be a very stupid thing to you. As soon as they found out your benefits would be suspended and you would probably fall into arrears and debt quite quickly. You would also have to sign a legal document which could be used against you in court if you failed to disclose.
It wouldnt be the sensible decision to make.0 -
The OP hasn't mentioned or hinted anything about benefits at all, it was just a straightforward question about notifying the council about living with his partner rather than alone and how to do this.
Quite the contrary the OP says he intends to tell the council about their partner living there as soon as they move in. So any benefits would automatically be linked in. I know when I get my HB reassessed, they even give figures for what is in my bank account and list what benefits I get and how much!0 -

Yup completely misread the initial house/flat bit. Apologies. Principle stands. They don't have to be joint tenants but should be declared prior to moving in.0 -
Thanks for the responses.BorisThomson wrote: »You're asking if you can lie on your application. That would be fraudulent, you would be gaining an advantage based on deception.

I never asked if i could lie on my application. We both infact work and inted to pay everything we need to. Pardon my ignorance but I was asking as niether of us have applied for housing before, so don't know the process or what any application would ask us to state, hence the question. Maybe my question wasn't clear enough or maybe some people on here have a general attitude of condesending self righteousness.
HampshireH thanks, thats the information i needed regarding being listed as an occupent. Will any occupents have to have proof of address and identity?
Just so nobody else presumes im trying to be fraudulent in my behaviour. The reason for this isn't fraudulent and its due to complicated living arrangements for me at the moment which makes it hard for me to get proof of address, she wants to apply as soon as possible. If I need to get proof of my address being listed as an occupent I intend to do so.0 -
Hi.
If it just an allocation to go on the housing register then whoever applies will need to provide evidence of finances and living arrangements. I.e. not own a house. Basically evidencd a need for social housing based on their eligibility criteria. This info and what the criteria is should be readily available on your local authority website.
If however 1 person applies and is offered then it will only be issued as a sole tenancy. This is because the application was in sole name.
Most councils or housing associations won't add a 2nd person until they can prove they have been an occupant for a minimum of 12months. Hence being listed as an occupant.
However. The advantage would come by failing to disclose because your partner may be eligible without hour income but combined you may not be.
Best to be honest from day 1. Most forms have an any other info section so you can explain all there. Or go and speak to th council.
Finally social housing could take years to be offered to you.0 -
