is £42 a month too much for my gas?

I know its a hard thing to judge as there are so many variables but have been talking to others and they dont seem to be on the same amount as me so just wondered! Cant think of the exact amount of gas I use although I calculated it last year when I switched to southern as they were the best for me.

To give you an idea I have a 4 bed house although rads are not on in 2 rooms and there is gas ch. The water is also heated by gas. I have been trying to keep costs down and only putting it on for a couple hours at night (water only at present) with a bit more at weekend. I have put the c heating on only a couple of times in the last month when I have been really cold and then only for a few hours.

The house is double glazed and has cavity wall insulation although its still a very cold house or maybe its just the fact that I am a very cold person.

when my bill came a coupel of weeks ago i checked it as it was estimated and it was almost spot on.

my boiler is 16 years old (as is the house) and a mate of mine who has a similar sized house said he is only paying £25 a month. I realise that he may be actually having a shortfall based on estimates but it just got me wondering how much others pay by dd ??

  • I would say that is about right just from what you have said.

  • Sounds about right... My bill is £45 and this is based on readings. I've got a similar situation to you except my boiler is 'slightly newer.

Sounds good Mrs Baggins for a 4bed...I use an electric shower and the electric kettle for hot water. See little point in heating a big tank and only using about a gallon.
Depends how many in the house.

I pay £55 for gas and electric, mine is a 3 bed semi - which I guess makes a difference having one less wall exposed to the elements.

I tend to have heating on for an hour in the morning and 3 - 4 hours in the eve....

my house is quite a warm house - don't know why, but it is compared to my mum's house which always feels cold.

my old 3 bed semi was £30 a month and the heating was on 24/7 set at 22 deg. ( new boiler )

my 3 bed detached is £70 a month in the winter and the heating is on no where near as much ( 25 year old boiler)

so you can see how widely they vary
