my partner was a named driver on my mums mobility car, we live 12 miles away and had to request in writing and this was deemed as ok but we did get written confimration first. She drives it most of the time its only when he does things like take her shopping or take things to the dump for her that he uses it . xCompetition Wins 2017: Humans Boxset : £25 Cheque, Lego Batman Goodies0

I see her about one weekend every month and we like to go out together. I get very very sick as a passenger so have to drive. She can't get into mine so I have to drive hers.
She used to have my uncle on as a second driver and I went on temporarily over the weekends I was there. Until motability brought in the rule that the temp driver had to be with the main driver when being added on - which didn't work as motability is closed during the time I'm with her from 2000 on a Friday to 0500 on Monday.
So my uncle was taken off as the main second driver and I am on there permanently - and if he needs to drive the car then he goes on a temp driver (given he lives 2 miles from my mum!).
I was just pointing out that you can be the permanent named second driver on a motability car if you live over 5 miles away and it doesn't necessarily mean a tracker!
She's now been added perminently under special rules, even though she's not 21 yet. When i was given permision to add her perminently she had to be with me when i rang for this, but certainly not when it was just temp.
I think sometimes they often make up their own rules, depending on who you speak to.0 -
I'm a named Motability driver, too, and I had no issue with distance from the Main Driver's home (it's much further than 5 miles), but he only really needs assistance with driving on very long trips. No tracker on the car (and I doubt he would accept one).
When my friend got the car, we looked at the numbers quite carefully, and although Motability is a good deal IF you really want a brand new car, it isn't such a good deal that you couldn't afford to look elsewhere if the terms were inconvenient.0 -
For my mum its ideal. She only learnt to drive aged 63 and passed her test six four weeks before my dad found he had terminal cancer. She has severe mobility issues - has had one hip replaced and a knee but still needs the other hip and the other knee done. And her spine is fused.
She could buy her own car (she once worked in a garage) but its just easier for her not to have to worry about insurance and MOT and maintenance or Tyres.0
