Can't get a credit rating ???

  • Having spoken to the Estate Agency looking after my son's prospective flat, they were adamant I had to be a guarantor jointly and severally with all the other tenants' parents. That means that if one defaults, all the parents are jointly liable if the parent of the defaulting student also refuses to pay. That's the first point which brings on the second....

The main point is that as guarantors for my son's rent, my wife and I, jointly and or singly, are ineligable to assist financially because the Estate Agent (who is authorised legally to make a credit check upon us) cannot access our Credit Score/ Credit rating because we do not have one. They have no leeway for changing their system because the computer won't allow it and have never met anyone without a credit rating. Hey ho. We have therefore had to bypass the whole thing by paying 3 months rent in advance on a postdated cheque that can be cashed 14 days prior to my son taking up residence in September 2018. That avoids the problem of necessitating a guarantor I gather. The Agents are now happy. How fu88ing stupid is this?

Still, the guy is now in the right place with the right people and yards from where he needs to be every morning so I guess that's worth the candle.

I'd like to point out we're not "Daily Telegraph parachute parents" and he is suitably useless at communicating with us for weeks or months on end :) as any parent of a 20 year old would expect. We leave him to his own mistakes and successes as you should. Still you have to do your bit.

Thank you everybody for your advice and help.
