AMEX preferred rewards gold card

So I’m on my second time of this card, had one a year or so ago, got the 20,000 bonus points, referred my husband, cancelled my card before the annual fee was due. He got his 20,000 bonus points, referred me back a year later, cancelled his card.

Is it ok to continue doing this infinite times? So between us we would get 20,000 bonus points plus the 9,000 points for referring a friend each year, and never pay the annual fee. The only condition I can see in relation to this is you are only eligible for the bonus points if you haven’t had a rewards enrolled card in the last 6 months. It just feels a bit scheming! But would be very lucrative to keep cycling round like this, does anyone else do this? Will Amex realise and stop us?

Sorry if this has been answered previously, had a good look and couldn’t see anything.
Thanks
