Cutting Down Alcohol Thread

I've been mulling over posting about this but I've decided it's worth sharing.
We've got a neighbour who I realised recently isn't as much as a friend as I'd thought. For Lent I wanted to finally kick the sugar and chocolate habit, both of which are a bit out of control, as in eating a whole £1 box of Maltez3rs or a T3rry's Chocolat3 Orang3 at one sitting. So, for Lent, no food with added sugar like cake, pudding and biscuits, no sweets, obviously, and no chocolate. None.
I managed four weeks and I was thrilled to bits with that, because it's nearly four years since I gave up the booze and without doubt, the sugar-craving and feeding has been a constant for all that time. I've managed one week sugar free in all of that time, but that's it. I was chuffed as nuts with four weeks, and so far the cravings haven't come back - I can stop after two biscuits. It's a major achievement for me and one I cherish.
The 'friend' has managed to bring the subject up three times, always in front of other people, and each time reminds me that I didn't manage to go sugar and chocolate free for the whole of Lent. In fact, she's gone as far as saying, and I quote, 'You failed.'
I'm now a genuinely robust enough human being to be able to say, 'I may have done, but I managed four weeks and I'm thrilled with that.' Her opinion is only shocking from the point of view that she shared it, she is relentless in sharing it, that she does so publicly, and that she thinks it's valid to point out people's 'failures' to them - as if we don't all already know when we slip up.
I value people who remind us all how much we've achieved, how far we've come, any progress we've made and what we did to make the world a better place, either for ourselves or for others.
I need people in my life who make a point of reminding us that if we set ourselves an ambitious target and we don't quite make it, we've still made a big change - which was really the whole point in the first place.
I love this thread and everyone who posts on it for exactly that reason.
I will be cheering you on from the sidelines, FatRab.
4/30 please, Baileys.Better is good enough.0 -
Thanks HB
Some people just seem to crave being involved in, and bringing unwanted drama to, other folks lives. I've had a drink 5 times since the end of January. I'd have knocked that out in one week by Friday tea time last year. This thread has helped me and made me hold myself to account.
Feeling disappointed because I didn't get a wee smiley overachiever badge was not an emotion I was in any way familiar with!

HB what a lovely post and congratulations on your 4 weeks without sugar that is a heck of an achievement and deserves praise nor derision. I'm afraid the label "friend" is a misnomer, friends want to build you up not knock you down. Ditch the neg head0

That's absolutely right. Whatever is your 'friend's' problem? Is she jealous of your achievements or just a rude and tactless person????
I think this thread has just the right balance of support and accountability. That's why I'm still here. I could just tally my AF days in a notebook but it wouldn't be the same.:A
Out of interest (aka nosiness:o) HB, do you have a 'sugar' plan going forward?
I'm back from my Easter break. Actually we got back last night so with travelling I had an AF day yesterday. Great to be off the ground and I claim my helicopter! No drinking planned today either.
2/10 AFDs please Baileys.0 -
Good afternoon everyone,
Still persisting down here. HBI Concur with the judgement of Maman! Your neighbour is obviously not a friend. Me thinks she has a bit of the green eyed monster about her!
As someone who has struggled over the years with my weight I know how difficult it is to not to have that sugar fix, so four weeks is a massive achievement. I think you've made a point over the years by saying in a round-a-bout way what a safe place this thread is. I have ceased to be surprised by how supportive and non-judgemental the peeps that post are, please feel free to tell us about your progress whether liquid or otherwise.
3 please Baileys

Honey Bear there will always be people who try to bring you down to make themselves feel better, in the words of Taylor Swift "Shake it off" and be proud of yourself and your achievements. Maybe distance yourself from the so called friend.
