Thanks Paspartur and CathyBird. The engineer we use has tried everywhere to get hold of the spare part needed, but it simply isn't available. I'm very cross, because it means something that could have cost a few pence will mean I have to shell out hundreds of pounds for a new-to-me one, and the old one will have to be as recycled as much as it's components will allow - which isn't much from what I understand. It's an almost hopeless task targeting plastic straws when computers have been cluttering up the planet at an astonishingly hideous rate for decades. *closet green*

Honey Bear, it's also the loss of data with the old computer - I don't know if you have been organised enough to keep it backed up but in my experience when they go it's always when you've just saved something onto it that you really really need! Sod's law in operation I guess. I hope it all works out as painlessly as possible.0

Fortunately for me, there are very few things on the laptop that matter enough for me to be worried about them. I email the important documents to myself as backups, and so that I can print them on the main computer in my office. The freelance engineer we use has salvaged all the data and has kept the hard drive so that if I spot any anomolies he can rescue the original files. In about a month or so he'll destroy it and the rest of it will be used for spare parts, but inevitably some of it will go to landfill. I've been using the same chap for 20 years and he's never let me down yet - if he says he can't source the part, it can't be done.
