Backing up Android phone to Google?

I'm still relatively new to an Android phone and I've had to send it away for a repair. I had the usual reminder to back it up, though it's only a screen replacement so shouldn't affect the data.
But my limited understanding of the sync process between Android and Google is that, while new items added to the phone appear in, say, my Google calendar, similarly items deleted from the phone disappear from my Google calendar.
So, if the calendar data on the phone is deleted, why won't I lose all the Google calendar data?

Your data is syncing with your google account on googles servers. Just make sure all your important stuff is syncing in settings>accounts>google account"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

I get that, dipso, but still don't see why one deletion to a calendar entry is reflected in my Google a/c but not a deletion of all entries.0

You are not deleting all entries if you lose the data on your phone.
You would still be able to access the calendar on other devices or when you re-log into your phone.
The events are held on the Google servers and only deleted if instructed so.

if you factory reset your phone all of your data, memories and multimedia (if synced) are still available on other devices just not on your phone until you boot up, log back into your google account and re-sync"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

The only real thing to watch are SMS and call logs (and music stored on the device) ... these don't automatically backup to Google servers unless you've installed apps to do this.0

Excellent, thanks for the advice.
I couldn't see that there was a difference between me actively deleting an entry and the data being erased in some way. Now I know that there is, I am reassured.
Thanks to all.0
