Has anyone any experience with paying their student loans back after years of living overseas? Do you have to back pay for years you have went without paying? Asking for a friend

Did your friend notify them he was abroad?
Did your friend defer payment?
If not he would be asked to pay the set amount for the country he was in.
If he didn't he may be in breach of his contract and could now be asked to pay back the whole outstanding amount.
