Credit file help please

I’m currently paying a debt collection agency for a joint bank account debt with my my ex that went £1000 over its overdraft limit. It’s showing on my credit file as a negative factor stating “you have had at least one account in default or repossession to (the bank)”
Could someone please explain why is states this, even though I’m paying them back?
There is only this 1 negative and 12 positives, but my credit score is extremely low. I’m on a prepayment meter and worried about swapping to a credit meter, in case I fail a credit check. To explain why I’m worried, I’m not eligible to 0% balance transfer cards- the lowest APR I’ve been “offered” on a soft search is 39.9%! I seem to be heavily penalised for this one negative.
Thanks in advance for any advice

For a start your score is only seen by you.
It maybe only 1 negative but the account was overdrawn.
Why was it allowed to go overdrawn ?0 -
My ex was the main earner, I was on mat leave and he left and took his wages with him and transferred his wage to a different bank. I contacted the bank and explained the situation, but it took several weeks for them to freeze the account, by which time, unpaid charges etc took it horrendously overdrawn. He’s never offered to help pay the debt, I’m not in a financial position to pay it back other than in small monthly amounts. I’ve paid this agreed amount every month since it happened, around 4 years ago.0

From what you have posted it sounds like it took more than a few weeks to come to an arrangement and it sounds like you have a default registered against your account.
This will be seen as a negative for 6 years from the date the default was issued, regardless of if you pay the debt back or not.0 -
Yes that’s what I feared, thanks for confirming.
Another question, if I may? I would like to financially disassociate from him but I’m aware that’s only an option if we don’t hold any accounts together.
Does this apply to me, the current account is closed, but obviously the debt is still current, so I’m unclear if I could take this route
