Unknown Phoenix life policy

I am executor for my dads estate and so far things have been simple no need for probate as not enough money. A couple of weeks ago i was contacted by my half sister telling me about a policy She had tried to sort but was told the executor need to claim. She sent me the claim form fron Phoenix but no other details. Called Phoenix but they would not give me ant info until they had received documents required (data protection). I sent off the form and have today recived a letter telling me the value of the policy and because of the amount they need probate. The letter also states that the sum is not guaranteed until the claim requirements have been received. My half sister is being cagey and Phoenix now says it can't tell me anything until I get probate. Is this genuine I am likely to go through probate process and pay the fess to find its worth nothing?

    Sounds right.
  • Do you have the policy documents? Do you know if the policy names a recipient or if it's to be paid to your father's estate?

I'm guessing the final value will be calculated once they have all the confirmed facts so the value is considered an estimate only but, hopefully, should be reasonably accurate, especially if the policy has been held for some time.
