If they need you available then that counts as work.

What happens once you have done 40hrs?

I suspect this will not last book your paid holiday ASAP.

Next time get better clarification on contractual arrangements.

    Well, I suggest it's time for a re-negotiation.

You say you're at their beck and call, but to me that implies that they need you, and it may not have occurred to them that if you ever did say "sorry no I can't do that" at short notice then they'd have a problem.

Have YOU been able to work out any patterns? For example, they regularly ask you to do X on Tuesdays, and rarely need you on Thursdays. From that, could you come with a proposal?

I really can't see how they expect this to work for you ... How do you know when to turn up, do they really ring you at ANY time and expect you to drop everything?

Yes they really do ring me at anytime and expect me to appear, that’s why it’s so hard to plan anything or have any social life. There’s two things I do regularly, but everything else is just ad hoc whenever they ring me, so I’m on call all the time although my contracted hours are only 40hours, in effect I can get a phone call anytime and regularly do so having any kind of family life is difficult. I think that the times they don’t need me are classed as my “time off” but I never know this, it’s just because they don’t contact me rather than they tell me they don’t need me.

They're taking the proverbial. Have you had a conversation with them about how unrealistic this is? What was discussed/agreed at interview?
Time to draw that line in the sand and/or look elsewhere.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I’ve asked what my hours are and just been told I work when required and to see the bigger picture. For example we were booked into see a nursery for my son this morning but I’ve missed that and am taking my boss out. Only found out half an hour ago
  • Is this a live in nanny position? Or incredibly well paid?

Otherwise it sounds like modern day servitude.

    No. Just no.

There are all kinds of driving positions available, and I can't think of anything which would be as ridiculous as this.

They're the ones who need to see the bigger picture.

It’s good to hear all these opinions, I’m looking for something else as it’s just not working and it’s really taking its toll on my relationship and family life. Going back to the European time directives, I finished work at half midnight last night and was back this morning doing the school run at eight, so they don’t even respect that. And for the money I get it’s not worth it anymore
