which bank ??

Options
We are shortly going to receive a lump sum from the sale a recently deceased home it isn't massive amount less then £100,000. i am in a bit of a delema as which bank to put it in it's not really for saving etc as we will be taking out amounts for general stuff like paying off our mortgage having work done on our house etc so money will be moving about from UK to Spain.. I am a pensioner so i only have my pension money at the moment which is the best free banking bank with good bank service unlike mine the Yorkshire who have been horrendous and i wouldn't recommend to anyone

Do you live in Spain, as this would make quite a difference to which answers to your question would be valid?

Also, what specifically would 'good service' mean to you? Some would consider that to mean access to local branches, others prefer phone banking, others online or via app, etc - or to put it another way, what do you dislike about Yorkshire Bank?
  • yes we live in Spain ,,As for Yorkshire i have found their customer service terrible they restrict my movement of money in and out of my account they will not allow me my own money. i have a problem moving money from Spain to my account and their has been going on for months they insist it isn't their fault when it is and i have been a Yorkshire customer for over 30 years.. the good service i mean good customer service.. who try to be helpfull

At the risk of stating the obvious, if you live in Spain and want your money to be readily accessible there, why don't you put it into a Spanish bank? Apart from anything else, you'd be severely curtailed in your options if you tried to open a UK bank account while not resident here anyway....

    Santander anyone ?
  • Santander???? Hahahahaha you don't know Santander Spain then we have big issues with Santander we used to bank with them here. all went well until two issues we were down south 3 hours from our home we had so;d a car so had a pocket full of cash so we went to the local branch asked them to deposit this money in our account we were told you can't do that here you can only use your own branch and no where else!!!!!!
second problem they opened a new branch much closer to our house only 12 km and our branch was over 50km away so off we went to change it to the new branch when we asked to to do that simply move from one branch to another we were told sorry if you want to do that you have close that account and apply to open another in the new branch(no guarantee that they would) then restart all direct debits payments you have in the old afresh. And the amount off paperwork here is incredible..
Spanish banking is a disaster you try to withdraw money with your card in another bank and the charges can extortionate.....
You can do nothing unless you are at your own branch.....

Plus Santander UK and Banco Santandero are effectively two different companies.

    OP -
Do you live permanently in Spain as most, if not all bank accounts and savings accounts do require you to be a UK resident to open and hold the accounts.

Potentially you may benefit from having a discussion with an IFA.

Any posts given on here and not to be taken as advice just simply my views on the original post.
  • The only thing about Santander they had like a two part bank account one for your £ and the other for your euro's so you could transfer between the two....

Is that on the Banco Santandero product range?
Are there no conversion fees for transferring the money from GBP to EUR on that account?

HSBC and (possibly) Barclays are exceptions to this. HSBC are the most likely bet.
