Are you taking them out of washer and putting them on a surface where for instance coffee has dripped and you haven’t noticed. (I only suggest this because I had a similar issue and this was the reason!).

Haha I wish I was but nope! I know it’s from being washed but don’t know the cause and neither does the plumber.

No advice to add, only sympathy. This kind of problem would drive me nuts so I’m following the thread with interest.

Same here, I've got an expensive cream top that I've tried everything to get the mysterious brown marks off. One last thing I'm going to try is some bleach applied with an old tooth brush. It'll probably ruin it, but unless somebody comes up with something soon, I'm running out of options.

Mine are definitely not the scummy trail left by too much powder/calgon, I've had that before and this isn't the same.

  • Anything just white can be re-washed with either milton added to the conditioner section or if you're really brave - bleach. It will remove the marks. Or something precious - get a toothbrush & dip it in milton or bleach, gently apply to the brown mark then wash as normal.

Ours does this occasionally & I have no idea why.

We bung it on the hottest wash possible & run it empty to nuke anything that may be festering.

Also worth having a look at the door seal where it folds over - sometimes gunk gets caught up in there & possibly that is the culprit. Although it's more likely to be little gremlins with spray paint when you're not looking (distant relatives of "calories - those little creatures that hide in your wardrobe & sew your clothes tighter over night):rotfl:

Thanks all for replying. The plumber has recently fitted a filter, hoping this would resolve the problem, but sadly it hasn!!!8217;t. As slinky pointed out, in my case this definitely isn!!!8217;t anything to do with a build up of anything - I!!!8217;ve also had that before on an older machine and this looks very different. My current machine is brand new so nothing has built up.

What I have noticed, though, is that the stains get worse or even seem to just appear as my clothes dry. I know this isn!!!8217;t caused by anything they are touching as most of my clothes are hung up to air dry.

    This situation is literally driving me bonkers! My bedding is ruined and I can!!!8217;t even wear light clothes anymore because I can!!!8217;t wash them. All I can think is it must be something to do with the pipes !!!55358;!!!56631;!!!8205;!!!9792;!!!65039;

do you have copper, lead or galvanised pipes?
Is the washer on mains or from a tanked supply

Galvanised pipes, and indeed galvanised tanks can introduce rust into the water system.

Get a coffee filter ( or similar) then check all the other taps running the water through them.
If you get marks on the filter from other taps then i would suspect a problem with your tanks/pipes
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow.. :p

  • Did you ever find out what it was?
I too have just bought a new machine and am still getting these spots. Yesterday my son's t-shirt was plastered!.
Do you use vanish? I am wondering if it's that since I have eliminated every other possibility. Just washed without it and only got one or two, but it could be yesterday's residue.
It can't be the pipes because the bath water comes up clean, and the washing machine pipes have filters. Either that or its chlorine in the tap water, as that smells stronger recently

Is the washing machine hot or cold fill?

If hot fill, it could be rust spots from the hot water tank.

Unlikely on a new machine, aren't they all cold fill now?
