Domain and email account

Options
Hi
Apologies if this is not the correct place to post this.
I have a cheap domain that came with a free email account which I have had for 12 years. I think it is about £6 per year.
I have received an email saying that they have ceased trading and I need to transfer it.
Does anyone know/recommend where I should go.
I do not want a website/hosting. Purely to keep the domain so that I can use the free email account that came with it as I am self employed and everyone emails me on it.
Looking at some sites they say email hosting, which I know is different.
I hope I have made some kind of sense.
Many thanks in advance

I've been using 123-reg.co.uk for 10 years or so, my mate uses 1and1.co.uk. Had no problems with either of them.

Like you, we just have a domain registered, and set up email forwarding (not their expensive email hosting services), and use our ISP's SMTP server to send mail from the registered domain.

I know several people that have had issues with 1and1.

  • thank you. I think I assumed that email forwarding meant that you couldn't actually send emails etc but perhaps I have that wrong.
I thought I needed one that gave you an email address with the domain

Email forwarding just lets your email host receive messages. I use a free GMX hosting account, and have set up email forwarding so that messages sent to me@mydomain.com are forwarded to user123@gmx.co.uk.

To send mail, you need to use an SMTP server. Your ISP should allow you to send mail from your domain. (You may have to register your domain with them somehow.)

This can be a problem on laptops and mobile devices where you might be connecting to networks other than your own ISP. I'm not sure what the best solution to this would be... Maybe you could find a third-party SMTP provider, or maybe your only option would be to pay for expensive email hosting :-/
  • Ah ok, that is useful information. Thank you
The domain company I have had included free email accounts and so I didn't realise until now that email hosting is different.
I clearly need to hurry up though as I only have two weeks before it closes.
    Thanks again

Another one for 123reg. I've got a load of domains hosted there that I've had for the last 10 years.
It is around £12 a year for domain hosting which includes email forwarding.
If you want a mailbox with them you have to pay extra.
