Audi tt 3.2

Hi,

Ive been looking at the audi TT 1st and 2nd Gen 3.2 versions. There are quite a few out there even with high miles that look like they are in good nick(from the pics atleast). Does anyone know what they are like for build quality? i.e rust, leaks

What's the likelyhood of the TT being a future classic. I had looked at some low mileage 1st gen ones for about 8k. Does anyone know what the depreciation is like and if theres a good chance it could gain any value over the next 10-20 years?

Thanks

Well there's a guy who has a Youtube channel who posts about performance and prestige cars. He used to run around in an Audi TT 1st Gen and had over 250,000 miles on it when he sold it. Whilst this was in the USA I have no reason to expect that a European vehicle maintained well wouldn't be able to do the same.

Will it be a classic? Who knows. There seems to be no formula for what makes a classic. Stuff you'd never consider ever would be at the time such as a family run around are now worth daft money but other identical vehicles from the same time made by another company aren't worth a jot.

Sure fire future classic, particularly MK1 V6 models. Plenty of TTs still about, but lots of ropey ones. Really good ones already gaining value and MK1 V6 models aren’t so common.

Rarity doesn't guarantee it will become a classic. You don't see many Morris Marinas :j

    Good owners forum here http://www.ttforum.co.uk/index.php

Couple of quid for full access but well worth it if you're seriously considering one.

The 'dashpod' (the bit with the dials) can fail in the Mk 1 TTs - check any that you buy whether it has been replaced or not. If not, or if you can't find out, you may want to budget for one. I seem to remember the electric windows on my wife's (1.8 225bhp) Mk 1 TT taking a hissy fit at one point too, and I think that's a weak spot. The shock absorbers needed replaced at 80,000 miles.
They don't drive as well as they look, but they're a design classic, and the 3.2 V6 will sound superb.

IIRC the Mk 1 had a reputation for handling like a Porsche (backwards hedge through).

Only initially but it was recalled very early on to "fix" it with the addition of suspension mods, a rear spoiler and ESP.

Yep the early recall involved fitting all cars with spoilers and a lead weight inside the rear bumper to balance things up a little. I think they also made it handle so it would err towards understeer rather than oversteer too. As such, the drive is a bit dull.

I had one a good 10 years ago. 225 bhp 1.8T. Loved it. The quality of the interior was great. Lovely kappa leather seats too. Some say the weight of the 3.2 engine negated any performance advantage over the 1.8T. As others have mentioned, the dashpots can go but they can be fixed now. A company called BBA Reman do the repairs. Also on the 1.8s, the oil pickup pipe can get blocked full of crud so if you buy one, give it a good service, drop the sump to make sure it's all clean in there and clear out the pickup pipe.
