Car Problems

Hi I purchased a used in 2015 (1 previous owner) and at this point it was already 2 years old. I purchased it from a reputable dealer Garage and with 12months warranty.
I have had a problem with the coolant leaking which I first reported in the August 2016 whilst it was still in warranty. I have been back to the garage a total of 7 times since then with the same issue and each time they fobbed me off with the same excuse that there was either and Air lock or that they just couldnt fault it.
Finally in November last year 2017 they called to say that they had located the issue and it was actually a manufactoring fault which would require a partial rebuid of the engine... they then called again to say that factory would not repair the engine astoo expensive and they wanted to offer me a like for like replacement for my car. I agreed to the like for like and hoped that it would be sorted before christmas... they showed me a replacement with a value that seemed fair and i was told that they would just need to confirm it with the factory.
I had a call after christmas saying the factory had approved the replacemnet so I merrily went intoday to try and sort it... to then be told that the factory would only honour £10,250 not the £14,250 car they showed me before christmas.
Where do i stand with the consumer rights with this.. the garage itself have been great with providing me a courtesey car but i dont feel that they are acting in my best interests... i paid £16000 for my car back in 2015 and reported the problem within the warranty period. The garage has now also said that they would fix the car but tbh I dont like the idea of reselling a car with a replaced engine?
Any advice anyone could give would be much apprciated I feel that I am going to end up caving in as i just want to sort this out now!

It might help if you told us the make and model of the car.

If a 2013 VW Golf (same model Golf) costs £10,250 retail then it's a reasonable offer

If they've now offered to fix it then you don't really have many options.

Even with the hassle, you've still had 2/3 years use from it, so the offer sounds reasonable.

I'd have no issue buying/owning a car with a new engine

Replacing the engine with a brand new one is a remedy I'd willingly accept if I was in your position

OP, if you really want to continue this thread I'd ask for it to be moved to the dedicated Motoring board.

If your car didn't have the manufacturing fault, how much could you reasonably expect to sell it for?

If more than 10k then they should be offering more than 10k. If less then perhaps their offer isn't as bad as you originally thought.

If a 2 year old Golf cost £16,000 in 2015 there is no way it would be £14,250 to replace more than 2 years later.
  • Ok thanks for your input guys ... think we are going to ask them to repair it now ... I was more worried that they were taking advantage of the situation but sounds as though they are probably being ok :)
