EBAY ; returning item over 2KG (buyers fault)

Need some advice on returns.
My dad bought this car part for his car from ebay. The item weighs more than 2KG. The item doesn’t fit. So my dad wants to return at his cost, as his mistake.
On the option for ebay return it gives royal mail £3.05 and collect plus at £4.20.
Surely, there is no way royal mail would take that for £3.05?
Is there a catch?

If took it to post office and they scanned it. It’s over 2KG. Surely Royal mail would not accept that as surely Parcelforce?
Can anyone advise?

There is no catch. The Royal Mail option is RMT (Royal Mail Tracked) and takes parcels up to 15kg, albeit I thought the charge was slightly more than that. If Ebay have provided a label use it.

Edit - I have just looked at the charge and that charge is for up to 2kg. The label should still be fine to use. If you get any problems with it, let eBay know after you've tried to use it.

Ok thanks. Just printed off the RM label.
Gonna take it to the PO later on.

Get a free certificate of posting too. The tracking won't update for at least 24 hours maybe longer, but it should be back with the seller in 3 days (the day of posting being day 1) normally.

Don't worry about adding the tracking to the return as it does it automatically, although it implies you need to and gives an error message if you try.

Why would the label be 'fine to use' when OP has said the item weights over 2kg? Why would ebay want to know about the problem when it is up to the sender to check they have a valid label for the service they choose to use?

Because it is prepaid from ebay on behalf of the seller.

The label is presented to the buyer in such a way as it gives no weight, it just gives two (or sometimes three) carriers to chose from.

The buyer has selected Royal Mail. The label is 'on account' and charged to eBay on the basis of the weights given in the listing [or when not supplied, taken on an average]. I use RMT(R) and the price is the same, regardless of whether I have a return of a needle or a haystack. My contract is for £X per item.

The only difference with the ebay label is that ebay charge the buyer/seller for the service depending on who is using the label.

PO accepted the parcel fine, It weighed 5.1KG. All for £3.05 prepaid!
