Not told return postage would be to an international address

Hi,

I purchased something online from the brand Salomon which appeared to be a UK site as it was in English, priced in GBP and had a UK customer service phone number.

Before ordering I checked the returns policy as always and it states you can return within 14 days if not happy.

However when the items arrived (which were not suitable), the returns label was an address in Belgium which is obviously going to cost a lot more than posting to a UK address.

I can't see anything on the website info that makes this clear so I do feel I've been misled. The returns info online just states you can return items but doesn't state it will require international postage

I can't see anything obvious on the site that tells me their warehouse is based in Belgium?

Can anyone give me some advice as I don't want to pay international postage costs and wouldn't have ordered had I known.

  • Unless the item is really large or heavy, postage shouldn't be too bad, shop around.

But I am afraid its a lesson, don't order things without making sure its what you want. Email the company and ask questions if needed.
Ordering to view is not really a good idea, for you or the company.

Well I clicked and found this statement in their help section on returns.
Returns are to be sent at your own cost to our warehouse in Belgium, except if the product is defective upon arrival or if you haven't receive the correct product. If you experience the latter, contact us below.

I hadn't seen that-lesson then is to dig around harder! I usually just read the returns policy. If the website is in another language or priced in euros then I'd expect it to be paying return international postage.

Unfortunately there aren't any local shops stocking the items. I hate ordering online for many reasons but am having to do it increasingly more often when stores don't stock a large range of items or sizes (especially women's) or don't even stock the brand.

  • If you paid by Paypal there is a way to reclaim postage up to £15.

I have to say I generally always read the returns and at least locate an address to be on the safe side.

Is it hiking boots? The box might just fit into the W+H+D limit of 90cm for a small parcel, and they should come in at under 2kg. If so you can send by Royal Mail properly tracked and signed for less than £20.

Remember to pay the £2.50 to up the compensation amount, assuming the goods are worth between £50 and £250.
