A genuine stop-start battery is designed to be discharged down to 50% capacity a couple of hundred times. They are really heavy compared to a standard starter duty battery, as they are made with lead plates, rather than whatever thin cheap alloy they get away with in standard ones .
So they cost about £200 if you want a make you have heard of.

A standard duty starter battery will fail in a couple of month tops in a stop-start scenario.

It's a 2 year warranted stop start battery and was around the £100 mark. I know the symptoms of a failing stop start battery so I'll happily risk a cheapo one rather than double the price for a 3 year warranty. Original battery failed after 4.5 years.
  • I'd definitely kick up a fuss about this. Yes the main dealer is expensive but in return you'd expect the best diagnostic kit and we'll trained expert mechanics. It's not on to be guessing what the fault is and then changing all sorts of parts at the customers expense until they hit the jackpot.

Might be best to raise a complaint with the Ford's head office.

Thanks, I think you've hit the nail on the head. You expect main dealer to be expensive because you expect good service, quality parts and expert mechanics. That's my biggest frustration here. Thanks everyone for responding to this question, it's been really helpful. :)
