    Indeed, especially if they know that the freehold is of value (might be different if they had evidence that this is merely a corrective deed to reflect the price previously paid). Rather akin to "my clients would like to own your house, just sign here please..."

    Just to play devil's advocate:

    Suppose the currrent 'owner' of the house thought he'd bought the freehold and maybe paid on that basis, and is now trying to sell. His buyer finds there is only has a 43 year lease available, and, of course, turns tail and runs for the hills.

    The owner is now in a panic. What can he do? He tells his solicitor to try to get the freehold, and hence the letter.

    What a moral dilemma!
