I wanna thank you present for Muslim friend

A new friend of mine who is a Muslim, has been really kind to me lately and I would like to give her something as a thank you present but have no ideas what to get her.

I know she loves sweet foods and wondered if there is something I could make, maybe a cake or some sweets but another friend said she thinks that Muslims do not eat anything with gelatin and possibly don't eat eggs either. Is there anyone out there who could clarify this for me. Are there any website with recipes that Muslims would particularly like?

    hi Shopndrop

My husband is Muslim and I can assure you that they do eat eggs.

Basically they do not eat anything that has anything to do with pigs, so you have to read labels thoroughly and they dont eat gelatine because it may have been made from pig bones.
But you can use a vegetarian substitute or buy halal gelatine from an ethnic grocers.

I always make cakes with butter to be sure.

I will make some cakes as well as Coconut Macaroons and will use butter. That is really useful as normally I would just use margarine for cakes.
  • I always have to remember not to use lard in my pastry if I'm entertaining Muslims

I'm Jewish(we don't eat pork either) and my boyfriend isn't. Every year his mum makes the BEST mince pies ever. Last year I asked her how she got her pastry so flaky and scrummy. She then told me that she uses half butter and half lard. I was devastated. It was clearly an oversight on her part as she is fastidious about pork and bacon when I am around.

Now I have an ethical and moral dilemma as they are the best pies ever and I have eaten them for the past 4 years and now this year I can't but really want to.

    Hi joeyemma

my husband says that if you eat a pork product in ignorance then that is forgivable (I know it's a different religion, but hey! same meat different gravy).

You can even eating it if you are starving to death and there is nothing else.

I must admit that at the start of our relationship I sometimes gave him pork products by mistake-once it was pigs kidney in a bought pie! But I'm much more careful now.
