Dubai holiday

:j

So we're planning a holiday to Dubai this March and wondered if anyone has any experience renting cars there. We've look at expedia and other comparison sites, all seem to have really high prices around £500 for 10 days, and in addition includes a refundable excess fee of over £400 which they use in event of an accident. There seems to ways to avoid this by buying insurance that will waive this fee.

Also there doesn't seem many options to drive to Oman, i've seen only a few local companies offering this but nothing from the bigger rental companies, sixt/europcar etc.

Anyone help on this would be appreciated!

I've been Dubai before and taxis are SUPER cheap. No need for a hire car, there's taxis everywhere and the most expensive taxi I had was equivilant of £25-£30 which was an hour long journey. Most trips were about £5 equivalent.

Also I would not like to drive in Dubai, there are pretty aggressive drivers there, so if you're not used to that then it might be a shock.

A cautionary note from a previous experience, I pre booked a rental with budget, for pick up at the airport. I do not possess a new photo style driving licence, still having the old green one. On arrival I was denied the rental as they did not accept the old style licence. Cut a long story short check with the rental agency, if you have a new style licence you should be fine.

To cut down costs you can pre purchase annual or single trip excess insurance policies in the UK.

I can't comment on crossing of borders.

Where ever in the Middle East it is their country and if you weren't there the accident wouldn't have happened.
It's your money. Except if it's the governments.
