Horses and Moneysaving

I know that is a paradox but I have a few moneysaving tips and hope others do too. I think there are a few horsey people on here
Furniture polish is as good as mane and tail spray for getting tangles out
I use astonish leather cleaner for tack cleaning its normally about £1 a bottle and is great on grease
Instead of buying small bags or buckets of horse treats Baileys sell 20kg sacks of fibre plus nuggets for about £10
I buy tack and rugs at horsey car boot sales and local auctions
Thats the main ones I can think of for now. Interested in hearing other's tips

From the six or seven years of "sharing" a horse, many years ago when our DD was into ponies/horses/showjumping/gymkhanas etc, may I say that your title "horses and moneysaving" is an oxymoron!
It cost a fortune - but we did have fun!0 -
Wood pellets sold as fuel make really good shavings replacement. I buy by the pallet (with the correct VAT) & spend less than £300 a year for 6 horses stables.
Buy hay off the field for half the price or look for deals late spring when farmers want to sell last years hay cheap to fit in the next crop.
Join World Horse Welfare or the BHS for bargain 3rd party insurance (BHS also offers a legal helpline), then i put £75 a month into an ISA to cover vet fees, it is also worth looking at KBIS who do a catastrophe vet cover for £275- absolute bargain.
Pound shops are great for car wash sponges for general use, back to black spray is fab on rubber boots, dandruff shampoo/baby oil/aqueous cream etc all useful to have.
I buy wormers in bulk when on special & look for generic brands with the same ingredients eg ivermectin can be less than £5 a horse where as the branded version is £15 etc
Prevention will save many bills so mine have teeth done annually, farrier every 6 weeks, vet innoculates against flu annually. I run my hands down legs EVERY day so i can spot something is wrong before it gets nasty eg a tendon pull or cracked heel
Pig oil & sulphur is great in this weather for keeping mud fever at bay & also for the coloured cobs who are prone to feather mites. If you can keep your head when all around you are losing theirs, its just possible you haven't grasped the situation0 -
Having had horses all my life you may b able to save a few pennies here and there but horses and money saving do not go hand in hand, horses and bankruptcy clearly do.0
