Contents cover and non-existent council help

This is insurance related so bear with me.

I have the unfortunate privilege of working for LloydsTSB. Saw a customer today who wanted to know why she was always overdrawn and being charged.

After looking into it I find:

- Her daughter had a direct debit on the account that she knew nothing about (cancelled and account set so no direct debits required to be set up)

- Her grandson using her debit card for internet sites (card cancelled and only needs a cash point card so thats dealt with too)

She insists she will deal with it and get everything sorted. Turns out she lives in warden controled flats and has no contents cover in place. Not only that but there was a fire next door to her flat a few weeks ago and she could of lost everything. The cost of this cover £5.86, and the scenario starts there.

"But I don't need the cover, it will be fine"
"So you have savings to replace you stuff?"
"No, but my daughter says I dont need it, she would help out"
"So you would ask her for help if god fibid the worst were to happen"
"Well I would have to"
"Wouldn't you rather have the peace of mind knowing it was sorted?"
"I suppose but my daughter says she would do it"
"So you wouldn't like to ask her and can afford the cost" (especially since I have managed to stop her being ripped off for about £100 a month of her £400 income)
"Yes"
"So will can set it up and your sorted"
"Yes"

Fast forward a few hours and this lady omes back with......... Her daughter wanting to know why:

- I have TOLD her mum she can no longer have direct debits on the account
- I have TAKEN AWAY her debit card and and replaced it with a cash point card.
- I FORCED dear old mum into the cover when if anything happened the coucil would give her a grant for free money to cover all her personnel possesions even her jewelery etc. (which the coucil do not do and I don't think any council do)

Has anyone else heard of people with this belief? It drives me nuts because in my mind it is VITAL to have at the vey least some basic cover in place and the daughter in all this seem to be telling mum any old rubbish to get her to stop spending money.

Yep, you saw a lot of it when the summer floods occured. People without cover expecting the council / central government to step in and compensate them.

Some people just want the moon on a stick don't they.

PS: I know bank advisors often get a lot of stick for trying to sell unnecessary stuff but well done for taking the time to sort this ladies problems out. Sounds like her own family could not be bothered.
