Previous job had 13 weeks full sick pay, you could come back for a week, go off again, and the 13 weeks would re-start from the beginning...........They did change it after as while

Just an update from me on what has occurred since I first posted.

My company reviewed the situation and have now changed the policy to be 18 days for each service year up to a maximum of 90 days.

Whilst not as generous as the original terms this does seem to be an equitable offer.

Until the next time they decide to review it. Your terms of service are under attack, this needs to be resisted as far as possible.

Might be worth checking whether there is any third party insurance in place - my employer only pays 4 weeks at full pay, but after 13 weeks we are eligible for an insurance backed scheme which then pays 75% of salary for an indefinite period (I think - never seen anyone get to the end of it yet so don't know for certain). I suspect probably not given the size of the company - bigger places tend to self insure but worth checking. Alternative would be to buy your own policy covering the same issue - probably not that expensive and might be worth it for the peace of mind.

  • The issue I think some companies have with a full pay sickness scheme is that there will always be those who will abuse it.

I worked once with a girl, whose best friend admitted that the girl was off on the sick simply because she wanted the time off.

Weirdly enough when her 6 months full pay ran out she was back.

Admittedly this was a few years back but it has always stuck in my mind how some can ruin it for others
