Windows update error

Options
Hi

I am having problems updating my Windows 10 pc. On 3rd Jan an update was downloaded onto my pc and a re-start was completed afterwards. I was presented with a blue windows logo and it just sat there for a very long time.

I entered F8 set up mode and was able to do a system restore which took my pc back a few days. All was well.

The update downloaded again, and the same happened, so I did the above again with the restore.

I have identified the update being KB4056892

My pc is an old Dell running AMD chipset.

I have told windows I am on a metered connection which has halted the update from downloading again.

When I go into updates/ it is showing there as failed.

Does anyone know of a fix or work-around?

Thanks
Regards,

Money Saver

Had to deal with the same problem on a few PCs lately - they were both ageing Intel processors, not AMD.
Microsoft have supposedly stopped that update being downloaded to AMD computers, but they've screwed things up big time with this "fix" so who knows what is happening. If you can get the machine running again by restoring and not having it connected to the internet, on another machine look for and download wushowhide (just google it) from Microsoft and load that onto the affected computer. When you run it it gives you the option to choose updates not to be installed. Find KB4056892 and choose to "hide" it. That should stop the system attempting to download it, but other updates will continue to come through.
    That's what worked for me.

    Edit:
As you've set it as a metered connection, you could probably download and run wushowhide directly on the affected computer, then switch off the metered connection to let other things through. The update continues to show as "failed" but it doesn't try to re-install it.
