Getting out of booking from hell

Our party of 2 couples, myself my sister and our spouses, booked a package with a travel firm for transport to a UK hotel, hotel stay and excursions. Now one of our party, my sisters husband, has fallen seriously ill, and will be hospitalised for the foreseeable. We tried to find someone to take over the tickets. It was only then that someone we asked along pointed to the various (600+) reviews of the hotel, supported by truly horrific photos of rotting food, broken drains, filthy rooms and just about everything ghastly you can imagine. Is there any way you can cancel a holiday on the basis of such bad news in advance of going? The trip is in 3 weeks time. I’ve looked up the hygiene rating which is 1 star. I should add that the holiday company say they can’t give a refund or transfer to another holiday, as the date for that was last week. I have not discussed the state of the hotel with them as I did not know about it at the time. I contacted them because I didn’t want to leave my sister at this awful time. It seems our holiday insurance would not cover this eventuality.

The fact that one of the booked party is seriously ill ?
Or that you've had a change of heart having seen the reviews ?

I can understand the latter, but am surprised about the former - I thought that was exactly the sort of circumstance that holiday insurance was intended for ....

Your sister can cancel and claim on insurance, providing it isn't pre-existing. Check with your insurance but unlikely.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
