Life insurance for chronic renal condition

Options
Hi martin & team
I was wondering if you can advise me on a question. My husband has a renal condition called renal tubular acidosis. We had lookedinto life insurance with a broker however he advised us that my husband was uninsurable.
Are u aware off any insurance companies might insure him and if not wat other options are available for cover.
Thanks maria

There are some insurers that consider those that are uninsurable through mainstream providers. However, you do need to consider that the premiums reflect the risks.

If it was a whole of market adviser or IFA then they should have access to the niche providers. If it was online service then they tend to cherry-pick the easy stuff or operate a panel rather than everybody. Or if it was a tied agent, they can only offer what they have in their range and not everyone else.

If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.

Often for kidney related conditions insurers look at things such as the applicants eGFR. If this is severely impaired then it can even affect the niche/specialist providers ability to offer cover and the main niche provider has recently withdraw from the market anyway, unfortunately.

You could look at the over 50's type policy's if your husband is old enough or there's a provider called ESMI who do a guaranteed acceptance plan, however, this would exclude death caused by a pre-existing condition so you may not feel that this is appropriate.

What type of RTA? I can't see why he should be uninsurable. I suspect the broker hasn't heard of the conditions and doesn't know what to put on a form.

  • Thanks i looked at ESMI but they dont cover northern ireland.
