PPI Claim rejected - Incorrect info given - Can i claim again

Afternoon all,

So i applied directly to Egg (citibank) to ask if i had PPI on an old card. It came back positive so i put in a complaint on there online form.

Completely my fault but i probably rushed the questionnaire and didnt put that i had sickness pay from employer at the time, they have today come back and said all claims rejected because there is no proof of me being able to make payments if i had an accident sickness or unemployment so therefor needed PPI.

I genuinely always refuse insurances so know i wouldnt have had it!

My question now, is my only option to go to the financial ombudsman? I do know its my fault for rushing it all but i still dont know how to say i would pay if i had accident or uemployment as i doubtful had insurance for that at the time.

I have just had another positive result of PPI against a loan with another bank , so i want to do this one properly and learm from my mistakes!

Thanks all

  • its a difficult one because as far as the lender is concerned they have based their decision on what you submitted, you could try by writing back to them and asking them to re-consider, explaining how you rushed it, but more importantly provide evidence of the sickness cover you would have got from your employer at the time. however this doesn't cover un-employment so they may just ignore it.

its worth the cost of a stamp, if they do still reject it then you do have the right to go to the ombudsman, but you need to give the lender the opportunity first if there is new evidence that you previously overlooked

The FOS is an independent adjudicator of complaints. They will look at what your case and they will look at the bank response. If you start introducing new evidence with the FOS they will question why you didnt do that with the firm directly. They will likely ask you for evidence unless its an employer on their database.

The provider may consider any new evidence you give. I think you should reply to them first and provide them with the new evidence you have and ask them to reconsider. If that fails, then you go to the FOS.

Thanks for the advice on this. I agree, me not giving the correct info shouldn't be cause to take it to the ombudsman yet. I'll contact bank and advise.

My only problem is evidence, my claim is against a credit card from 16 years ago, I no longer have any information from my employer at the time so they are literally taking my word for it? Hence the reject I imagine.

I have now another 2 with HSBC to claim for from the same time frame. Is completing the online form questionnaire the best way to go? How can I prove had sick policy in place and that I was mis sold each time!?

    Thanks

Have you contacted your former employer to ask if they can supply a list of the benefits they provided in your contract at the time?

Most of the firms and the FOS have a database of employer benefits that they have built up. If your employer is on that database then they will use that info. If its not, they will usually ask you to supply it.

Employers (including ex-employers) will often supply the info upon request.

So if you always refuse insurance how have you ended up having it on two different financial products and why have you done nothing about it until now. Why didn't you question the PPI when it came up on your credit card statement at the time considering that you claim you refused it?
