Hotpoint 12 month warranty

Hi all
It’s my 2018 resolution to be more assertive and stop being a pushover! Therefore I was hoping some of you may have some advice on the following please:
In March 2017 we got a new Hotpoint washerdryer. Our previous one had had numerous issues over its lifetime and since we had Domestic & General cover they offered to replace it. I was given a few model options but selected the only suitable one. Ffw 9 months and it packed in on 16/12. As it was older than 6 months Hotpoint said they had the right to try to fix it first. After several attempts they agreed to replace it. The engineer said he’d replaced all the possible parts and concluded that as it wouldn’t even switch on it must have a wiring fault.
Since these experiences have left me less than impressed with Hotpoint machines and I don’t trust the quality, I asked for a refund rather than a replacement. They agreed that this was fair. The point of contention is how much that refund should be for, since it was “purchased” as our insurance replacement. I contend that it should be the original RRP of the item, however Hotpoint have basically googled it and are only offering us the lowest discounted price of any online retailer. Do I have a point or not?

My experience with warranties has been that they run from the original date of purchase and not from replacement.
You’ll be very fortunate to get the full price more likely as the original is almost out of warranty (3/18) probably not much. How much have they offered?
(Incidentally I have a Hotpoint washer. Had it 8+ years no problems at all)0 -

Thanks Lizabeth. The actual original appliance was purchased around Oct 2011 so well out of warranty. I guess we had a kind of extended warranty/insurance with D&G. For around £6 a month they just kept on fixing it for years, until they can’t anymore when they replace it on a new-for-old basis! I’m not sure if this is better value in the long run but i suppose it gives you some kind of peace of mind.
The new machine has a two year warranty so expires Mar 2019. However they’ve written it off. We’ve had so many problems with HP that I can’t face another one. Every single repair involves taking a day off work and lots of calls and emails.0 -
Haha thanks Shaka, that’s what I’m tempted to do! I was on the phone to them and they said they’d give me the cash value of the item, then the woman realised that she hadn’t looked it up yet, so she literally just told me that she was googling it right then, and she just took the lowest sale price of £499. If it wasn’t on sale then it’s £640, so I do feel a bit cheated...0
