Tree Preservation Order

My neighbour told planning officers that she would replace her giant sycamore with a small-leaved lime, but her request was still thrown out

I can't believe that there was a preservation order on a sycamore.
A friend of mine had a beautiful mature copper beech in her garden which was subject to a PO.
Unfortunately, in a small garden such as it was, the beech needed pruning, as the low branches were restricting light and the higher ones encroaching over the residence.
Application was submitted to the local authority. But before council officer came to view the lower branches had been removed (expertly cut back to the trunk and sealed with tree sealant).
The council officer either did not notice or ignored this unauthorised action.
The allowed action was to cut back the offending branches in half, which was done, but it completely destroyed the naturalness of a copper beech in all its magnificent glory.0
