new central heating system

hi all

i have so far had a couple of quotes to replace my old knackered oil boiler with a new gas condensing bolier (Viessmann), as well as new hot water cylinder, 10 new raidiators, removing of the old oil boiler and water cylcinder, couple of towel rails, removing of the water tanks in the loft, with the boiler and cylinder being in the garage.

I have been told it will take about a week to do the work.

so far i have had quotes of £7750 and £7950 + VAT, is this correct? it seems quite high for the work to be done, given some of the suggested costs i have seen on websites which give you an idea?

any comments appreciated, it is a 4 bed detached bungalow if that helps.

Where abouts are you in the UK? It sounds cheap for the SE.

What about the cost of the new gas connection? Is this separate to this? Already in place?

VAT is going to add a significant amount - you could buy the boiler, cylinder and radiators yourself, and use a non VAT registered installer. I've always found that you can buy the equipment for less on online websites than the plumbers can from their preferred supplier anyway.

Are you reusing the existing pipework within the bungalow? How old is this, in good enough condition to keep? If you're changing from an open vented system to a pressurised system then leaks in existing pipework is a real risk. Can sometimes be a false economy to keep, depending on ease of access to the pipework.

Viessmann are overpriced in my opinion, so you could easily spend £2k on just the boiler and cylinder. Why this brand over another?

The boiler and cylinder at 2k isn't bad, add another 1-1.5k for radiators and controls it's about 3-3.5k for materials.

9.5k inc VAT for the job and 2 men split 6k profit, nice work if you can get it.

OP who quoted you, BG and another utilty provider? Try a local independent fitter.

    hi all

    thanks for your replies

in answer to the various questions

its sort of south, near Banbury.

both quotes so far are from local installers not BG or anyone like that. I had budgeted for around the amounts they have quoted, but including VAT tbh. The plan is to utilize the existing pipework, as both these locals have said that the copper from back then is much better quality than what you get now. the system flush will hopefully clean out a good degree of the rubbish.

Your point about ordering the boiler it self and cylinder is fine, I guess it is all the other bits they also need to order which don't come with the boiler/cylinder.

current oil boiler is around 40 years old, so most of the radiators are similar with the odd exception, a couple are sludge up any way and none of them have TRVs.

I am awaiting for another quote at the moment, but I suspect will be the same.

Bothe the quotes so far recommended viessmann, don't think much difference between that and Worcester bosch tbh.
  • As a benchmark, I've just paid £3600 (inc vat) for a full conversion. No rad changes, but a few new cold feeds and a waste pipe.
Having gone from low pressure to high pressure system, I've had a few pipe leaks, so watch out for those!

Does that include an unvented cylinder?

Which boiler did you go for?
